Jehovah Shalom — Choosing Peace on Purpose
“So Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord is Peace. To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.”
Today, my focus is on Shalom.
Not the idea of peace.
Not the absence of problems.
But Jehovah Shalom — the Lord is peace.
Personally, there are many things happening in my life right now that could keep me worrying all day, every day. Decisions. Responsibilities. Unknowns. If I allowed it, worry would take over my thoughts — and I know exactly who wants that.
But I will not give him that pleasure.
I am a child of God.
That means I don’t live from panic — I live from promise.
I don’t stand in uncertainty — I stand in my Father’s peace.
A peace that doesn’t always make sense.
A peace that holds steady even when circumstances haven’t changed yet.
Scripture reminds me of this truth:
Philippians 4:7 (NIV)
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
I know this peace is real because I’ve lived the opposite.
I’ve been in a place of worry before — carrying things so heavily that they consumed my thoughts. I replayed scenarios, stressed over outcomes, and tried to control what I couldn’t. And looking back now, some of the things I worried about so intensely back then… I don’t even remember them anymore.
But God remembers me.
That’s why today, I choose Shalom over worry. I lay everything at my Father’s feet — not because I don’t care, but because I trust Him. I trust that He has my back. I trust that He is working even when I can’t yet see how.
Scripture gives me this promise to stand on:
Romans 8:28 (NIV)
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
All things.
Not just the easy ones.
Not just the resolved ones.
Even the messy, uncertain, still-unfolding ones.
So today, I make a clear choice:
I will not live from anxiety.
I will not replay fear.
I will stand in Jehovah Shalom.
Shalom is wholeness.
Rest.
Stability for the soul.
And it is available to us right now.
Judges 6:24 NIV
Reflection
What has been trying to pull your focus into worry today?
Where do you need to intentionally choose Shalom instead of fear?
What would it look like to place that concern at your Father’s feet right now?
As you breathe in, whisper: “I am Your child.”
As you breathe out, whisper: “I choose Shalom.”
Closing Prayer
Jehovah Shalom, our Peace,
Today we come choosing You over worry and trust over fear.
You see everything that could weigh on our hearts — every concern, every unknown, every unanswered question.
We lay it all at Your feet again today, trusting that You are at work in all things.
Guard our hearts and our minds with Your peace that surpasses understanding.
Help us recognize worry when it tries to rise and choose Shalom instead.
Teach us to rest in You — not when everything is fixed, but right now.
Today, we stand in Your peace — whole, held, and confident in You.
Amen.
